Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the ability to question specific calls made by the official, following the protocol already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
