Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
